SNG is passionate about providing homes and helping our customers to successfully manage their tenancy – so they can live full and independent lives.
Sometimes we’re not able to offer someone a tenancy, even if they’ve successfully bid on a property. This is normally due to affordability and because we think we could be setting them up to fail.
There are also some new SNG customers who may need a bit of extra support to succeed in their tenancy. This can include young people leaving care, or individuals, couples or families moving on from temporary accommodation or homelessness into a permanent home.
To help people in these situations, we have teamed up with Your Own Place (YOP), a social enterprise with expertise in preventing homeless, to offer a Steps to Tenancy Success programme.
After completing the programme, we hope that the next time that individual applies for a home, we can turn that ‘no’ into a ‘yes’ - and those SNG customers who may have struggled to maintain their tenancy, feel confident to successfully manage their home.
How it works
Our Lettings Officers will refer unsuccessful housing applicants or new SNG customers who need further support to the programme (with their permission).
Your Own Place, which has an engaging, inclusive, values-led approach, then works with customers one-on-one or in small groups for a minimum of 12 weeks, and personalise the Steps to Tenancy Success programme according to individual’s needs.
Topics covered include money, housing, tenancy and cost of living, with practical tools and guidance so customers can manage unexpected obstacles and feel more in control. As part of the programme, customers can earn AQA-certified qualifications in everyday skills:
- How to manage and sustain a tenancy
- Understanding your housing options
- Budgeting and managing your money
- Reading and understanding bills
- Dealing with debt
- Finding the right help when you need it
Alongside Your Own Place’s support, our digital inclusion and employment and skills services help Steps to Tenancy Success participants access support to improve their digital skills and secure a job or training.
