Stockwell Park streets transformed into tree lined avenues as estate regeneration enters final chapter
Clutter and cars have been replaced by greenery and artwork following the completion of street improvements in Stockwell Park, Lambeth by SNG. New trees, planter boxes and rain gardens have all brightened up the estate’s loop roads which have also seen refreshed bollards, speed humps, recycled and new paving and enhanced public spaces for pedestrians and cyclists.
All resident and staff parking has been moved into refurbished underground car parks which have benefitted from remote security gates, improved ventilation, CCTV and brighter lighting. Undercroft renovations have also opened up spaces for potential workshop, studio and commercial activities.
New indoor waste and recycling points have been installed, replacing former open bin areas allowing SNG and SW9 Community Housing to repurpose waste, encourage recycling and minimise fly tipping. Surplus undercroft space has been repurposed to create new secure resident bicycle stores. In addition, two sites now have new fast charging points for electric cars in a further boost environmentally friendly transport options. The estate car club is already supporting car free lifestyles, with 480 residents signed up.
Local school children were involved in designing the community artwork on the steel tree bases and bin store doors. Many of their designs were inspired by local history, sites and landmarks around Stockwell and Brixton.
Tim Goodwin, SNG’s Regeneration Manager, commented: “We’re into the final chapter of our £250 million regeneration scheme of Stockwell Park which has delivered new homes along with refurbished existing homes and upgraded community spaces and streets. I’m really proud of what has been achieved over the last decade thanks to the dedicated work of SNG, SW9 Community Housing, partners and residents who have delivered a thriving community here.”
Delroy Rankin. Managing Director of SW9 Community Housing, said: “SW9 Community Housing welcomes the support SNG has shown us since 2007. We thank the Regeneration Team and other partners for their dedication and hard work towards enhancing the lives of our residents and the wider community.”
