Addressing bin store challenges

Problems with bin stores and fly tipping are common across many estates, but they’re not always easy to solve. Poor layouts, repeated misuse and long‑standing damage can turn shared spaces into ongoing frustrations for residents and affect how people feel about where they live.

On an estate in Wiltshire, these issues had built up over time, with fly tipping and poorly functioning bin stores affecting cleanliness, safety and the overall look of the area. Rather than relying on short‑term fixes, we committed to addressing the issues properly - in line with our Neighbourhoods Customer Promise to listen, take ownership and make a positive difference in our neighbourhoods.

Working collaboratively across teams, we took a long‑term approach and delivered a significant upgrade to four bin stores on the estate. This was a complex piece of work that required persistence and coordination, allowing us to address underlying design and maintenance issues rather than repeating temporary solutions.

The upgrades have transformed how these spaces look and function. The improved bin stores are cleaner, safer and more welcoming, and are intended to support better use and help reduce fly tipping over time.

These improvements are part of a wider investment programme in the area, which includes upgrades to homes as well as enhancements to shared spaces. Together, these works aim to improve everyday living conditions and make the neighbourhood a place residents can feel proud to call home.

This project is helping us understand what works well when tackling long‑standing challenges and how similar issues could be approached elsewhere in the future, with a focus on lasting change and better outcomes for customers.
