Supporting digital access through Get Boxes
Being able to get online is increasingly essential – from accessing services and managing appointments to learning new skills and staying connected with family and friends. For some residents, however, reliable internet access isn’t easy to come by.
To help address digital exclusion, we partnered with Jangala to introduce Get Boxes across some of our schemes. Get Boxes are compact, portable WiFi hubs designed to provide free internet access for people experiencing digital poverty.
A simple, safe way to get connected
Get Boxes are particularly well suited to shared spaces, such as communal lounges. They don’t collect personal data, are centrally managed, and are easy to set up – simply plug in, add a SIM card, and they’re ready to use. This makes them a practical, secure solution for residents who may not otherwise be able to get online.
With the support of our Scheme Officers, 20 Get Boxes were installed across several Housing for Older Persons schemes.
Making a measurable difference
Twelve months on, the impact of this small piece of technology is clear:
- 216 unique resident devices connected
- 7,389 hours of WiFi access provided
Residents are using the connection to build confidence following our Tea and Technology digital skills sessions, access online services, manage health appointments, search for work, continue learning, and stay in touch with loved ones.
Why it matters
By improving digital access in communal spaces, we’re helping residents feel more connected, independent and confident in an increasingly digital world. For some, it’s opened up new opportunities; for others, it’s simply made everyday tasks easier.
This project shows how a straightforward, practical solution – delivered in partnership – can make a real difference to people’s lives.
