New affordable homes completed in Honiton
People in East Devon can now call 90 new affordable properties home thanks to an investment by housing association SNG (Sovereign Network Group) to provide good, affordable homes in the area.
SNG bought the homes in a deal with housing developer Baker Estates on the 291-home site at the Hayne Lane area of the town.
These are a mixture of one and two-bedroom apartments, as well as two and three-bedroom houses. Of the new homes, SNG has made 45 for social rent and 45 for shared ownership customers, making a significant contribution to meeting local demand for affordable homes.
James Gibson, SNG’s Regional Managing Director for the West of England, said:
“This is the first large scale development of new homes in Honiton for many years, so it is fantastic that we have been able to secure 90 much needed affordable homes for both shared ownership and social rent. Working with East Devon District Council on the lettings and nominations of these homes has made a real difference towards meeting local housing demand and in helping to create a new, thriving community in Honiton.”
Councillor Dan Ledger, East Devon District Council’s portfolio holder for Sustainable Homes and Communities, said:
“This will make a huge difference to a lot of families within the district. The need for affordable housing, across East Devon, cannot be understated. There are currently around 5,000 households waiting on East Devon’s own housing register.
“This development also has the positive impact of £1.5 million in funding for Honiton. This will be used to improve the local area and its facilities, on play parks, doctors’ surgeries and other key improvements needed for the community.”
As part of the development, £1,562,000 has been set aside in Section 106 funding to make improvements in the local community through education, highway improvements, public open space and play areas.
