Work begins on 24 affordable homes in Mortimer Common

Work has begun on 24 high-quality affordable homes in Mortimer Common, West Berkshire, replacing an outdated over-55 scheme.

We're redeveloping Windmill Court on Windmill into a mixture of houses and maisonettes, with 13 homes for social rent, available to people on West Berkshire Council’s housing register, and 11 for Shared Ownership, ensuring a range of affordable options for local people.

All homes will meet our sector leading Homes and Place Standard, ensuring high levels of comfort, generous space, and strong energy efficiency. They will feature air source heat pumps and solar panels, helping residents benefit from lower running costs and more sustainable living. Each home will also include private outdoor space and parking.

Four households who previously lived at Windmill Court have already expressed interest in returning once the new homes are complete. Work is now underway with the final completions anticipated around late 2027/early 2028.

Satwinder Kukadia, SNG’s Development Delivery Director – South, commented:Our commitment to delivering good affordable homes and transforming communities in West Berkshire continues as we begin work at Mortimer Common. This project is replacing older buildings with a well-designed new community of affordable homes. By working to our Homes and Place Standard, we are ensuring these homes will be comfortable, spacious, and energy-efficient.”

Mortimer Common is already a thriving West Berkshire village with a strong community identity, local amenities and excellent transport links including nearby Mortimer railway station offering regular train services to Reading and Basingstoke.
