We’re beginning a major refurbishment programme across our accommodation in Gloucester.
Over the next year, we’ll be refreshing living spaces, improving safety features and upgrading key areas to create modern, comfortable homes.
As the project progresses, we’ll keep this page updated.

FAQs on the works and support available
We expect work to begin in mid April 2026. Dates are being finalised with our contractors, and we’ll share the full refurbishment timeline as soon as everything is confirmed.
The refurbishment will run over the next 12 months. We’ll keep you updated as each phase progresses.
A wide range of improvements will be completed across several buildings where needed, including:
- Internal redecorations
- New carpets and curtains
- Kitchen replacements
- Fire door upgrades and other safety enhancements
- External repairs such as roofing The exact work may vary depending on the needs of each building.
Yes. The works will take place in phases across all blocks, so we’ll need to temporarily empty up to three flats at a time. You’ll move (decant) to another flat while the works are carried out safely and efficiently.
Depending on availability, this may mean moving to our Cheltenham accommodation. If you do move to Cheltenham, we will fully reimburse your travel expenses.
You’ll receive 2-4 weeks’ notice before your move. At the very start of the project, notice may be slightly shorter while we’re getting the project up and running.
You’ll stay in your temporary accommodation until the work on your block is complete. We’ll keep you updated throughout and let you know as soon as it’s safe for you to return.
Yes, all personal items must be removed. We’ll help make this as easy as possible:
- Stackable packing crates will be provided one week before your move
- Contractors will move your packed crates to your temporary room
- Labels will be supplied for your flat number and move date
- All food items must be removed - anything left will be disposed of
- You’ll need to move fragile or valuable items yourself (such as TVs or personal valuables)
- Items belonging to SNG (furniture, bedding, kitchen equipment) should be left in place - we’ll take care of these
Any items left behind will be disposed of.
The Accommodation Office will let you know when your temporary room keys are ready for collection. Please return your current keys as soon as your move is complete.
On your moving day, the following will happen:
- Your temporary accommodation will be ready for you
- Contractors will move your packed crates
- You’ll move any items not in crates (e.g. fragile or valuable items)
- Once your flat is empty, return your key immediately to the Accommodation Office
Please let us know as early as possible. We’ll do our best to support you and make any reasonable adjustments
No. For health and safety reasons, only contractor staff will be allowed access during refurbishment.
We’re finalising the details, but where needed you can expect:
- Fresh, contemporary paint colours
- New neutral‑tone carpets
- Updated curtains or blinds
- Bathroom and kitchen improvements (where needed)
- External repairs and enhancements
Our aim is to create clean, modern and welcoming spaces that are practical and easy to make your own.
You won’t need to change your address. While you’re in temporary accommodation, your mail will be delivered to the Accommodation Office for collection.
There may be temporary changes to parking while contractors are on site. Some areas may be fenced off for safety or storage, but we’ll give you plenty of notice before any changes take place.
Yes. Your rent will continue as normal for your original home, even though you’ll be living elsewhere.
You will not pay rent on both properties, and if the temporary accommodation has a higher rent or additional charges, we’ll cover the difference.
Yes, you’ll return to your original accommodation once the works are complete. If you’d like to discuss a change, we’ll do our best to help.
The same process will apply:

- Your key will be available to collect
- Staff will move your packing crates back
- You’ll move any fragile or valuable items
- Please return your temporary accommodation key immediately once you’ve moved out
Yes. Crates must be signed out and signed back in with the Accommodation Team.
They should be returned within one week of moving back. Replacement charges may apply if they are not returned.
We understand refurbishment work can be disruptive, and we’re committed to keeping this to a minimum.
We will not be offering compensation payments, but you’ll be returning to newly refurbished accommodation with improved, modernised living spaces.
You’ll receive project announcements and ongoing updates throughout the programme.
You’ll also have continuous access to this dedicated FAQ webpage, which we will update regularly.
We also plan to hold a drop‑in session soon so you can meet the team and ask questions.
Your local Accommodation Team is always here to support you. You can reach us at Gloucesteroffice@sovereign.org.uk or call the Gloucester accommodation team on 01452 397 640.
