Thriving community garden in Andover comes first in SNG competition

A community green space in Andover has gained first prize in this year’s ‘In Bloom’ awards organised by SNG.

Poppy Community Garden in Livia Close, came top in the ‘Thriving Community Garden’ category where judges considered how well the space had been made visually appealing. They also considered how gardening work had benefitted the community, contributed to the improvement of a communal area, and reduced waste.

SNG customer and Poppy Community Gardener, Michael Parker, said: “It's always great to see members of the community coming together and supporting the garden. I'm always happy to see the friendships that are created when people from all different backgrounds and walks of life come together to share their knowledge and work collectively. It really is the best of our community and that's the driving force that keeps us doing what we do here at Poppy Community Garden."

Micheal and the group who maintain Poppy Community Garden received £200 in vouchers and a trophy for all their hard work. They were among 139 submissions from gardeners and gardening groups who stood out from over 85,000 households across Southern England. SNG customers live in a variety of homes and the In Bloom competition offered prizes across four categories of gardens with indoor, outdoor and community gardens, and green spaces all in contention.

Maria Vasquez, fellow In Bloom Judge and a 2024 winner, said: “I was blown away by the talent, creativity, and dedication demonstrated by the participants; they truly deserve the recognition and awards given. What touched me most was how a shared love of plants brought people across the community together. I am sure there are so many beautiful and inspiring green spaces across the UK that have yet to participate, and I hope that sharing these success stories through the competition will encourage more residents to apply.”
